| Multihulls at 33rd America's Cup to fly on 8 Feb 2010 |
The 33rd America's Cup, featuring a trimaran and a a catamaran, will commence in less than two weeks on 8 February, 2010, in Valencia, Spain.
The Official Website of the America's Cup has just reported that each race will be broadcast live and free of charge on the internet. It says:
The two fastest boats in history will fight for the America’s Cup over race courses that are up to six times bigger than the ones used in the 32nd America’s Cup. For this reason, the TV coverage of the racing will be key. For the first time in history, the races will be broadcast live and free of charge through www.americascup.com to reach the biggest, widest possible audience, including all the fans who will not be able to be in Valencia to witness live this historic competition.
Meanwhile, last Tuesday 19 January, 2010, the BMW Oracle Racing team's trimaran enjoyed her maiden voyage in Valencia. The BOR website reports:
When the boat took to the waters off the Port of Valencia, it was sporting "USA" emblazoned on its stern, the name designated for the boat by the Golden Gate Yacht Club when it challenged for the 33rd America’s Cup.
Previously, the trimaran had been called the "BOR 90". But now, in Spanish waters, this is the name the boat will carry into battle for the America’s Cup next month.
Conditions were ideal for a first test sail with four to eight knots of wind and just a small chop on the otherwise flat water.
Alinghi, the defending boat, stated on its website two days ago that:
With just a fortnight to go to the Match, race training is key; it seems though that the weather gods have other plans for the Defender over the next few days in Valencia.
...The Notice of Race for the 33rd America's Cup clearly sets out a weather window with a maximum wind speed of 15 knots at 60 metres; and a wave height of one metre. Safety is the driving factor here, Alinghi 5 has a very specific weather window in which the yacht and crew are safe to sail.
“These boats are highly powered up and flying a hull in eight to 10 knots, so by 15 knots the crew is trying to depower a lot; the loads on these multihulls are horrendous,” said Bilger (a meteorologist). As a comparison, during the last Cup, five knots was a reasonable variation range but in these boats two or three knots is critical, these boats are even more sensitive to the forecast.
This relates to a point made recently by Corsair Marine Dealer and ex America's Cup skipper, John Kolius, who wrote on this website under the headline, Trickle on down! The America's Cup:
Both these boats were designed to sail and flourish in about 5 knots of breeze. Neither boat has been sailed “in anger” nor has neither been sailed in over about 10 knots. The reason for not testing the boats in a more substantial breeze is the chance of a catastrophic failure that will render one team effectively out of the competition. The closer the timeline to the match date, the more the foot is going to come off the pedal because there will just not be time to put Humpty Dumpty back together if something should come apart.
No matter what types of guidelines the two teams agree to, the boats are going to be pushed for the first time at the start of the first race. It should not come as a surprise to anyone if one or both boats fail to finish one or more of the races.
If one or both of these big dogs comes apart, it has the potential to be quite dramatic. Hard core sailors are not going be too moved by something like this but beginners and potential sailors can possibly be turned off if they equate these fragile multihulls to the more robust multihulls that buoy the racing and cruising the world today.
It's going to be a fascinating America's Cup!
