North American Corsair 28 Class Association
Welcome to the North American Corsair 28 Class Association Website. This Class includes both the Corsair 28 and F-28 insignia boats, in center-cockpit or aft-cockpit model. The Corsair 28R is the high-performance version of the aft-cockpit model by virtue of a taller carbon fiber mast and more powerful sail plan. Read more about the introduction and evolution of the Corsair 28 here.
The North American Corsair 28 Class Association is dedicated to promoting racing of the Corsair 28 Class of sailboat as a restricted-design class in North America , building local Corsair 28 fleets, and opening up new events to owners. The Corsair 28R is quickly gaining popularity as a One Design racer with entry at Key West , NOOD regattas, a National Championship, and circuits in Texas and Florida underway. Go to the Regatta calendar for info links, or contact Bob Harkrider
The Class Officers will post new information to this site regularly, and notify Class members via the Corsair 28 List Server of updates and important announcements and information. For other information regarding the Class Association, or to suggest postings for this website, please contact the Class Officers.
On April 1, 2003 , the Class initiated a Sail Plan Measurement, Declaration and Certification program. Program details are included in the Sail Certification section, as well as a listing and dimensions for Class Member sails certified to-date. All sails built after March 31, 1999 must be measured and certified prior to participation in a Class Event.

2/20/07 – New Class Officers elected.
1/19/06 - Fourteen Corsair 28R's compete in the 2007 National Championship, held at Key West Race Week. Todd Hudgins on Dealers Choice once again dominated the Key West competition, with a third place in race one, and bullets in every other race. Second through fourth place was only separated by four points (out of nine races sailed), with Bob Harkrider finishing second, and new owner Peter Katcha in third. These three boats were all competing in the Championship fleet for Nationals honors as well. In the Presidents fleet - which consists entirely of amateur-crewed boats - Cliff Farrah had top boat, with Tom Reese placing second. The finish order was decided in the last race, with Cliff sailing one of his best races of the series to edge out Tom in the final tally. These two boats also finished fourth and fifth place overall, ahead of a couple of the pro-onboard boats (Championship fleet). Bruce Jenevein placed third in the Presidents fleet. Gary Jobson filmed some footage aboard a Corsair 28R on day five, here. Final results are posted here. Look for race reports on the Articles page.
9/24/06 – The Lands End Texas NOOD drew nine Corsair 28R entries, racing One Design. A typically “light air” event, this year the tables were turned and the southerly breeze kicked in at 22-30 knots for most of the first day, dropped a few knots the second day, and by Sunday was almost back to its normal 10-12 knot average. Class Champions Robert Onsgard and Robert Remmers managed the wind strength issue, but in the first race jumped the gun and started at the warning horn (one minute early), rather than with the rest of the fleet. They were scored a 10-point penalty for OCS. What a way to start a three-day regatta, with no throwouts allowed! However, they continued on a sailed a near-perfect series for the rest of the races, with all bullets, and one second place finish, to win the regatta. Local Marc Waters finished second. And John Novak continued his climb up the Class ladder to finish third. You can read stories recapping each day sailing on Sailing World’s site here.
7/8/06- The Corsair 28R’s will be holding their National Championship at the Acura Key West regatta in 2007. This will be the sixth year the Corsair 28R’s have attended Key West, and the number of boats is expected to exceed previous years. In addition to stellar race management and a full week of competition, can you think of a better place to be in January than sailing in the azure waters of Key West? Also, in addition to Overall trophies, boats skippered and crewed entirely by Group 1 competitors will also be competing for a set of Amateur awards. This will hopefully entice the owners who want to come out and learn from the professional sailors and Olympic medalists in the fleet (last year there were four Olympic medalists competing), but also be eligible for trophies based on amateur status. Read more about it here.
4/22/06 - Robert Onsgard and Robert Remmers (with Olympians Pease and Jay Glaser as crew) successfully defend their titles as Corsair 28R Class Champions. The four-day Nationals event was sailed in near-perfect weather in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. The venue included a mix of long distance, offshore, and bay windward-leeward contests. Bob Harkrider places second, and Matt Scharl (F-25C hotshot) finished third in the nine-boat fleet. Story here.
3/19/06 - Corsair 28's enter the Lands End San Diego NOOD for first time. The five-boat fleet of 28R, 28AC, 28CC and 28CCR models have fun racing as a "levels" Class. Racing was competitive, as when the results were tallied, the scorecard showed four boats finished with a first place and all boats finished with at least a second place. Bill Edward's Corsair 28CCR Tri to Fly - trailered all the way from Colorado - emerges with top honors. Story here.
2/19/06 One Design fleets of Corsair 28R's and Corsair 24's compete in the Lands End St Petersburg NOOD regatta. Racing was cancelled on Friday due to a lack of wind, but the attendees were treated to a Race and Learn seminar by Randy Smyth. On Saturday, a mid-day seabreeze brought relief to sailors, allowing the Race Committee to run three races. Matt Scharl topped the Corsair 28R fleet helming Rocketeer II, and Raul Lopez's I Fly took first in the Corsair 24 fleet. The St Petersburg Yacht Club, Sailing World, Lands End and all of the sponsors put on a first class event. Regatta review posted here, and Jon Colclasure's notes on the Smyth seminar posted here.

11/15/05 Marc Waters Menage a Trois sails a perfect five-race series to capture the Lands End Texas NOOD title. A three-way tie for second is decided in the final race, with Laurie Zotzky's Persevere crossing ahead of Grice's Rumline for honors. Read about it here.

Laurie Zotzky's Persevere finishes first overall, followed by Marc Waters Menage a Trois, and Grice's Rumline. Story here.
4/29/05 Bob Onsgard and Robert Remmers continue their winning streak at Corsair Nationals, Pensacola, Florida. Nine races - including a 48 mile distance race - were run over the course of four days, with plenty of wind, sunshine, competition, and off-the-water fun. Bob Harkrider takes second, and Marc Waters third. Race report and pictures.

3/23/05 Only one month away from the eleventh annual Corsair Nationals and Rendezvous, on April 23-28 in Pensacola, Florida. PYC made it through the havoc of Ivan, and stands ready to present all with great food, great entertainment, and hopefully steady breezes like last year. Sailing on Pensacola Bay is still as great as ever, only now there is more talent in the fleet. Come join us and share in the growth. For NOR click here. To register, click here.

2/20/05 Going into the final race, it was a virtual three-way tie between the top Corsair 28R’s at the St Pete NOOD regatta. Robert Remmers and Onsgard – who took delivery of their new Corsair 28R only one week earlier – managed to edge out Nethersole on Rocketeer II and Tom Reese on Flight Simulator. Racers were treated to three days of wind and sun. Results posted here.
1/21/05 After finishing fourth at Key West Race Week in 2003, and second in 2004, Todd Hudgins finally broke through to first in the 2005 event – winning decidedly with six bullets in eight races. Keith Notary – who won Olympic silver with Randy Smyth in 1992 - joined the crew with boat owner Peter Freudenberg. Smyth finished second sailing Rocketeer II, and Bob Gleason took third place on Hot Flash. Ten Corsair 28Rs raced this year in conditions varying from “mid 20’s with waves” to "3 ½ knots of wind with shifts and puffs." Premiere Racing info here, and Zotzky’s note here.
10/1/04 Lots of stuff happening with the Class: Key West regatta around the corner, St Pete NOOD return in February, Class Rules work underway, and Officer elections. More info here.
9/26/04 The 15th running of the Sailing World Texas NOOD regatta included ten Corsair 28R's on the starting line, and three Olympic medalists onboard: . Keith Notary (previous silver medal on Tornado) and Kevin Burnham (gold in 2004 on 470) sailed on Rocketeer II, and Charlie Ogletree (silver in 2004 on Tornado) crewed on Marc Waters Menage a Trois. The Waters/Ogletree boat finished third overall, and the Notary/Burham boat finished fourth - it was a very competitive crowd. Bob Harkrider took top honors, despite some overlapped finishes. Wayne Jablonowski finished second place overall. The rest of the finish order is listed on the NOOD website here.
